Which bit size?

A few days ago I measured Sunny's mouth with two different methods-marking a string in her mouth where the ends of her mouth are and measuring, and putting a cloth tape measure in her mouth. Both times I came up with about 4". Isn't that quite small? So, i'm wondering if I should get her a 4 3/4", or a 4 1/2" bit. I'm worried that the 3/4 will be too big, but the only bits I see in 1/2 are pony bits, so I fear that it would be too small. Any suggestions?

It depends on what kind of bit you are using, but I had a similiar issue with one of my arab's... and what I ended up doing was just putting those ugly round bit guards...two of them actually on each side so that I could use the bit my trainer suggested because I couldn't find i his size...with was 4 1/4.

I'm not sure of any other solution, but I bet someone else has a better solution.

One of the best ways I've found to measure a bit is to get an old garden hose and cut about an 8" length of it. Take 2 bit guards and put them over each end, then put the hose in the horse's mouth. Push the bit guard up the sides to measure the width the bit should be.
It works well because it is almost like having an adjustable, real size bit in the horse's mouth.

I think the rule of thumb is that you measure from lip to lip and then add 1/2 inch. So she would need a 4 1/2 inch. Yes it seems quite small but if that's the size she needs, then that's the size she needs.
