I recently purchased a 13 year old paint gelding. He was not being ridden often. The family used him for trail riding when friends came over. So, he was handled by different people who didn't know how to ride. I had horses growing up and took many lessons. When I started college I regretfully sold my horse. Four years later I am finally getting back into riding. I am only going to be using Breeze for trail riding. With that being said, I would like to improve our riding partnership. I have always said riding is like dancing. I do not know how much formal training he has had. He knows the basics; walk, trot, canter, neck reining, like a typical trail horse. He is great out on the trail, and loves to be ridden. He is waiting for me every evening. I can tell he wants to please and has a lot of potential, but he seems to be confused about some of the things I ask him. He seems to respond to leg aids fairly well, but could use some improvement. We need to improve on his balance, suppleness, and collectiveness. Can anyone recommend some good training books or DVDS? I know it would be beneficial for me to find an instructor, but I think I have enough knowledge to reinforce myself and him. Like I said, I am not looking to do any showing with him. I just want to improve our rides out on the trail.
