Cell phone coverage - Canada and Alaska

My parents are taking a month long trip through Canada and Alaska up to the Arctic Circle.... on their motorcycles.

Unfortunatley cell phone coverage (verizon) is very minimal, esp when they get out in the less populated areas.

Does anyone have suggestions for a communication device that is relatively small, but powerful, and can be used just about everywhere? I've been searching online, but I'm not that tech saavy.

Thanks!

Regardless of the phones you look at, they all rely on the same thing-cell phone towers. When my ex and I worked on rural ambulance services, we used Mike Phones through Telus (Nextel). They worked really well.
