Got my new English saddle... but what is the nose band for?
I am beyond excited- my new English saddle arrived already!!! It is very nice black and I will probably replace the girth and the pad.... but hey, it is a start.
The bridle seems way too big..... and I am not sure about this extra noseband. Do I need it? What is it for?
I am too tired to ride him tonight- but tomorrow is his 5th birthday, so I will try it on then. Sooooo excited!
Extra noseband? A picture would help.... just a guess, does it look like this:
If so, that is a flash noseband, it is adjusted like so:
It is used to quiet the bit in the mouth, though many people misuse it to strap the mouth shut if their horses evade or gape. Some just use it for looks, as it's popular in the dressage ring now. If you don't need it or know how to adjust it, just take it off.
It is the single one.... Western bridles don't have one at all.....
Oh, okay... nosebands are really just a "look" in English, same as no nosebands in Western. If you don't like it, you don't have to use it; when it's adjusted correctly, a basic noseband doesn't do much. If you do use it, make sure it's adjusted so that 2 fingers (stacked) can fit between her jawbone and the noseband. The noseband does have a purpose for standing martingales, but you don't have to worry about that.
Fantastic. Thank you :)
