Training A Halter Baby :)
Hey guys! As you know I recently bought a GORGEOUS colt out of Ciarra Cool (by The Power Te) and by My Incredible Sonny.
Both studs have AMAZING halter and western pleasure backgrounds.
My little colt has a lot to live up too, and i want to make him the best but I am just a begginner at halter. So, i need help on how to train him to set up and show. He absolutely LOVES people and he's already done SOO well with leading and being touched. He's a very quick learner and seems to be following in Dad's footsteps.
Here are a few of Dad's accomplishments:
APHA- Superior Open Halter, Superior Amateur Halter, ROM Open & Amateur Halter, 6 Grand Champions, 5 Reserve Grands, Has 101 Open/Amateur Halter Points.
PtHA- 180 Open Pinto Halter Points, ROE Open Halter, ROM Open Halter, 8 Grands, 2 Reserve Grands, and 2 Champion Of Champion Awards.
But oh sooo many more, just couldnt list them.
Sooo... I really need advice on how to make him perfect in the show ring. Ill be starting training for next years show circuit in August so i have time to practice on my trail brat gelding lol.
Sooo please help!
O and here's some pics of my boy :)
First off, I'd like to say I'm not one to show before my horses are 2 years old. I believe they shouldn't be pushed too much souring their first year; they need to understand people are good, and "fun". At about 1 year and a bit I start to have expectations, then by two years I'll show. I have as much time as I need to show a horse, so rushing into the first year is not my thing. I also think mentally they have a hard time with showing, because their attention span isn't great yet. But, thats just my personal opinion! I know many people will disagree.
I would make sure that the colt is used to people touching him. For example; His feet will need to be picked, you will have to get him used to the clippers, he needs to let you touch him everywhere.
He should stand tied so much it just becomes an expected part of life.
Have you trailered him much?
Has he been in big groups of horses and people?
Besides everything I already mentioned you have to do all of the halter/showmanship training.
The more the better, but for minutes at a time. If it only takes 30 seconds...Great! Then play with him for 10 minutes... Then train again.
Please, please, please be careful not to push too much. This little guy needs to be mentally ready or else you'll sour him.
After re-reading the question I'm not sure you said his exact age, so if he's not under one then my first paragraph isn't exactly what I'd do:)
First of all, what a gorgeous little man! I'm all about not rushing them, but using short sessions with them. Ie; work with them for 10 minutes in the morning, finish on a good note, then do 10-20 more minutes of work in the afternoon. I'll post how I trained my boy to set up etc when I get home from work.
O believe me, im one to sayy DO NOT PUSH YOUR HORSES! haha!
He absolutely loves ppl! If momma is getting attention he pushes hisself to where we are! lol. he loves bath time and he thinks that picking up his feet is just another fun game, so he does it pretty well. He stays in a pasture with about 7 other mares and their babies. with a couple of geldings. so a total of about 15-17 horses. As for trailoring, we havent started him on that yet. but im sure he'll do great he's a fast learner. and all he'll do for the first couple of years is halter shows, and maybe trail in hand, and showmanship classes. untill he's three then im gonna have him broke to do trail and western pleasure.
Well then, it sounds like you two are off to a good start!
Assuming he's already halter broke, can turn each way, back etc. then I think you should start slowly introducing things like setting up, lunging (if you do led trail), crossing bridges etc. Once again, still at work being lazy on Horseforum but I'll post more later
