As usual, please don't critique the horses as they're not mine.
I rode Brooke in my lesson Friday. The first little course has all jumps set at 2'3", the second one has a mixture of 2'3" and 2'6".
What I see:
-Shoulders are rounded [working on this. *sigh*]
-Bracing on my stirrups
-Could be quieter with my upper body at the canter?
-Hands could be lower, thumbs should be higher
-in the first clip I'm leaning back a lot [my trainer was yelling to use more leg and hand and I took that to mean lean back, bahahahaha]
*grumble* On the flat with her I REALLY tried to focus on lifting my ribcage and fixing my hands...but of course once we started jumping it all went out the window.
Oh - and a quick word on all the awkward distances: I wasn't really focusing on seeing the distances [bad I know] because my trainer was seeing if we could shorten/lengthen their stride to get a set number of strides in the line. So I had to try and get 5 in the first, 7 in the second, and 6 in the third. Of course we'd jump in and then halfway down the line I'd try and shorten her up http://www.horsegroomingsupplies.com...m/rolleyes.gif So then in order to fit in the strides and avoid getting yelled at we'd have an awkward distance, haha. I also have a habit of letting her get all strung out around the corners, which led to awkward distances into the lines. Although she (she being my trainer) did want a shorter distance into the final line, I could have made it fit better. I'm horrible at planning ahead. Thing usually go better when I just play it by ear, hehehe. [so much for quick, eh?]
Pictures [one is from last week]
After my lesson I was given the chance to ride Chopper, who is big and beautiful and amazing. Of course...I kind of failed at trotting with him -_- His trot was much...loftier than Brookes, so I kept flying out of the saddle when I tried to sit it and waaaay over posting when I tried to post. I will say, this was my first time ever riding him so I wasn't sure what to expect. I just kinda let him do his own thing, especially at the canter.
Things I see:
-Shoulders are rounded [big surprise, eh?]
-I think I let my heels come up a little, probably cause I was trying to use the spurs
OH. And for the jumping...I've been riding with this trainer for a year, and this is what she had to work with when I started with her...I was basically pointed and jumps and told to go without any knowledge of proper form:
bump please :)
Woww I'm really impressed! Your "then and now" pictures are veryy different.
I could only really see you when you were right in front of the camera, and overall I like what I see. Not sure if you're aware or not, but when you're cantering your seat is really affecting your horse's gait which is great, because your seat is quiet stern, and keeping your horse at a nice pace. (I especially noticed this with your second horse at the canter) That being said, in the video of you trotting you were just kind of along for the ride posting at whatever rhythm your horse gave you, and if you slow your posting and hesitate in your seat ever so slightly before you rise while keeping your leg on, I think you'll find a more effective trot.
I agree with kerplop. You and Brooke seem to make a really good team together. But IMO, you dont have a bad chairseat with chopper,(then again i cant see the trotting video to well) All in all you look good. But with brooke i couldnt see a chairseat. At the canter with brooke in the 2nd video, your rocking a bit. Try using your core and hips. Use your legs to tell her to slow a bit so you dont have to rock with her so much. Keep up the good work! Btw how tall is Brooke? She looks HUGE!
Sorry, my dad doesn't really understand the concept of zoom, hahaha. Lol on Chopper [the second horse], I was trying to keep him going because he was realllyyyy sluggish [until I used my crop...then he bucked and was fine]. Yeah trotting was kind of horrible. That was right after I got on...but it didn't really improve much as we went along. If I ride him again I'm definitely gonna work on the trot hehe. I slacked off and just kinda hung on because my trainer wasn't out there to yell at me, hahaha.
Thank you both!
