Put your hands down!
Hi, I'm posting this for my mom, she has a problem with her hands.
When she rides our horse, walk and trot is pretty good, but then she starts cantering, YIKES!
During the winter she came off our horse hard at the canter when she lost her balance, and has just recently mustered up the courage to begin cantering again, and she has.
Her problem is, however, as soon as my horse picks up the canter, she hikes up her hands, but more prominently her inside one, which goes way up, she gets stiff with her body, my horse pops off the rail and she loses the canter.
Now her hands are good walking, the inside rein goes up a tiny bit at the trot but not to an extreme that causes my horse to come off the rail, but as soon as she starts to canter she hauls up his mouth and pulls him off the rail and ultimately, loses the canter in a few strides.
Now we're mainly trying to get her comfortable at the canter again, which is sort of working because she canters a little longer each time she rides, but she isn't going very far by pulling up on the inside and taking him off the rail.
We're wondering about any particular exercises she can do to help her relax her hands and body in the canter? Thanks :]
No reins, on the lunge, lightly holding the pommel of the saddle.
If you ride english, take the billet straps of the saddle pad and hold them in your hands with your reins. don't allow yourself to let go of them. It pretty much keeps your hands in the correct position, and you can steer too. it's what my instructor did for me. :)
