So I just got back from the NBHA State Show, and I placed in the finals, but my horse was running terriably. She normally turns on a dime and I've been having to hold her off the 3rd barrel so she won't knock it. But we normally show in dirt arenas, the state show has alot of sand in their arena. She blew by the 1st and 3rd barrel, way by. She wouldn't set up or slow down at all. she hasn't been doing that lately. She's a fast horse with a long stride who could easily place alot higher if she would turn like she knows how to. I stop her at the barrels when we pratice. I guess this weekend I'll figured out if it's going to continue or if it was just she didn't want to turn in that footing. She slid pretty badly the last time we ran in a sandy arena when she set up to turn the 3rd. She's normally a 1D/2D horse. I'm just kinda lost on how to get her to perform her best in any arena.
It could very well be the footing. My horse has off days like that. Maybe "bump" her with your inside rein a couple times before you get to the third barrel would make her turn earlier. When I say bump I mean pull back slightly. I do that to my barrel horse sometimes when we do poles to warn him he's going to turn. Good luck with her! :]
I wish it was that simple, I did full on half halts with both reins and even rated her to both barrels and she still got past them
Find an arena with sand and practice a lot of transitions. Like can you go from walk to canter, can you go full throttle and pull up by that fence post, figure eights, just lots of little exercises and changes that make her have to pay attention to you. A good horse can run in any footing. Some are just pickier then others and take a bit of persistence to get over it. :P
