Blanket Question!!

I am looking to buy a blanket for my horse before the sales are all gone. I live in southern ohio, so temps can get down to 0 degrees but are more around low 20's to low30's. I really like two blankets, both the same type and manufacturer-weatherbeeta-which i like a lot.

Is a 220 gram fill a decent fill for a horse with these living conditions, frequent turnout, and average winter coat? Thanks for any help!! I really need help fast since the sales are going to be over soon! Thanks!

How cold does it get where you're from? I use about 220 here in Oklahoma, where the windchill gets down to 15 but doesn't get too much colder then 30 F. I'd be more concerned about the outter shell. 600D is really not very sturdy and will rip if your horse is prone to playing rough, rubbing up to barbed wire, sharp edges, etc. I generally don't buy anything that's less then 1000D. I got my Saxon (by weatherbeeta) blanket off horse.com for pretty cheap. Maybe $70?

I was actually looking at those saxon blankets and i really liked them too. are they good quality? do you use them on QH's that are stocky? the temp can get down to 0 degrees.

I use them one all my Quarter Horses who are stocky. It gets down to minius 30 degrees celcius and that does just fine for my ponies. They all have nice warm winter coats and they don't get a blanket until it is below minus 20.

You are saying you use these weatherbeeta blankets on all of your horses and they do fine? It sounds cold where you live!

Yes, the horse i have is a QH and he's a pretty stocky guy but the blanket fits well. The medium weight saxon (the 1000d one, not the 600d) i believe is warmer then the weatherbeetas you were looking at: 250fill? i think? It's a great blanket! i got the blue one and he's beeeautiful. :) There's a paint at the barn who wears the green one and it's also lovely!

What is the average temp at your house taht you turn your horses out with the blankets on? the saxon is a 1200 denier blanket i think. it is a 250 fill too. where did you get a blue one?

this is the one i found. is that what you have?

I'd say the high can vary anywhere from 30 to even 50 between Dec to Feb. (right now it's 29). My QH has a pretty thick winter coat and the paint who has one is body clipped.

I got mine on horse.com. It's $69 I think? ANd free shipping! It's called the "Saxon Medium Turnout". It's a great blanket!
