Help! Need Advice

So I'm seriously looking into moving my pony closer to me for the school year when I go back to college.
However, I'm very nervous about how she will handle the situation. She has been with the same horses for 5 years now [She is about to be 9]. When we go to horse shows, if she is away from the horses she knows [the ones from our barn, obviously], she gets VERY nervous. She pretty much freaks out and won't calm down til she can see them again.
I'm nervous about how she will be if she goes to a new barn on her own.

So basically I would like some advice. Or has anyone else been through a similar situation and how did your horse handle it?

Thanks!

I havent had any experience with it, but my friend has. She moved her 20 something year old mare to our barn. I'll ask her to help you out when she comes online

It sounds like she is some what herd bound and moving her away from her friends might be a very good thing for her in the long run.

I agree. ^ I think it would be good for her to get away from the horses she's attatched too. You don't want a herdbound horse. Good luck!

Yeah, you guys got it on the nose! Herdbound for sure!

This would be good for her because it would teach her that YOU (or other people) are more important and in charge than her herd. This could calm her down alot later, but she will not like it at first. I won't lie, it won't be all peaches and cream when you move her and she might very well take a while to understand and accept that she won't see them any more.

Also, if it's even an option, I would ask the barn manager if there is somewhere you can put her where she can see and interact with other horses over a fence instead of just being in with them. This will prevent any injuries of turning her out with a new herd as well as help lessen her herdboundness.

I wish you good luck!

Moving her would be a very good idea! Considering she is so herdbound, it will help her. We got my old arab gelding and he had been with the same horses, for 8 years! He was totally freaked, but settled after 1 or 2 weeks. Then, about 7 months later, we moved again, and he settled down in 1 week or less. She'll get over it, she'll be sad, but she will get over it.

My gang moved home after being at the same boarding barn for 6 years. Yeah, it took them a week or 2 to chill and a month before they were back to their "I don't care, just feed me" attitudes.

I agree with everyone else - it'll be good for her. Sure, she'll be sad, but she can make new friends.

Not to hijack this post, but won't a herd-bound horse just become bound to their new herd after you move them?

Blink, Most likely, yes.
