Length of english girth

I need to get an english girth for my horse for my 17h OTTB. I measured him yesterday and he is 44" from side to side (where the girth would be up to the straps that attach to the girth. I'm thinking that I probably need to get a girth that is a bit shorter than that so that it fits snug. Is this correct? Maybe a 42"?

Did you measure to the bottom of the billets? If you only went to the bottom, then you need to go up a size. I would measure to the middle hole on the billet and then take off a size. If you take off a size from measuring the bottom of the billet, you won't be able to get it on at all.

Even 44 sounds short to me for the size of the horse. If you have tack shops near you, I would suggest getting a couple of sizes and returning what doesn't work. Also, much like womens clothing, all of a size are not necessarily the same, which makes it even more frustrating-then if you want elastic-one end or both......trying them is the best. My guy is huge, so takes a 54, with an extender, have tried ones labeled the next size up and they were the same or shorter!

^^ Good point, I forgot to mention the elastic.

Wow, that seems very short. My 16hh, currently underweight TB mare takes a 52" for her jumping saddle.

Yeah, my 16.2 TB is 1100 and takes a 48. Some saddles have much higher billets than others.
