I am having a bit of an issue with my jumping. Please note, I am in my heart a dressage rider, one day my body will agree lol, and jumping is purely and simply fun. Anyway, when we finish our flat work, and take our stirrups up to jump (at the end of most lessons), my right ankle starts to hurt. It hurts while I am posting most, but also when I jump. I know that I probably have a bit too much weight at the balls of my feet when my stirrups are short. I have asked my trainer, and she can't see me leaning to either side at all, so I just can't figure out what could be causing it :? I am an older rider (not ancient but not a spring chicken either lol) and I have only just gotten back into riding recently after a long break to have my kids.
So any ideas?
Yep, check that you're not turning your ankle in toward your horse instead of out at a 45 degree angle. Since you're a dressage rider, you've probably got it facing more forward than at an angle. I do it with my left ankle and it hurts like crazy afterwards.
It may be that either somehow you injured that ankle a few years ago and the ligaments may have been slighty permanently damaged, or you may be putting a certain amount of pressure on that ankle that you're not doing with the other, even if you may not notice it.
Check with these questions first, and then decide what to do. All I can really advise is to maybe try an ankle gaurd to give it more support, or get someone to REALLY REALLY analyze you from the ground. That's the best I can offer.
