Oxer vs. Vertical

I was a reading an article (or it could have been a book, I don't remember which) but it said that verticals are better to teach your horse to be round and not jump flat and that oxers taught a horse to jump flat.
I had always been taught the opposite, that oxers where better for teaching a horse to jump round.

What have you heard/learned?

It makes sense since oxers are longer it could make your horse jump flat. But I really think that rushing and going too fast make your horse jump flat.

The bascule over an oxer is going to be more of a flat shape then a vertical, because they have to jump up and then across. With a vertical they have to jump up. I don't think jumping oxers necessarily makes a horse learn to jump flat, leaving long or rushing to a fence like erikalynn said will. Making your horse bored by jumping little stuff repeatedly will also make them jump flat. Or catching them in the mouth/back so they jump inverted will do it to. As will not teaching them to use their hind end on the flat. :) There are quite a few exercises/gymnastics with oxers that are quite helpful in teaching your horse to jump round.
