Prospect Mares - Need help narrowing field
I have seriously been looking for another mare to bring up and add a little height to our future babies. Dez is just barely 15hh, which is great for me, and the disciplines I like, but I want possible variety. I want to appeal to people who want to lease, buy, or breed to horses that are a bit taller. I would also like to have at least 1 leggier horse at the barn for my own competition and possible leasing purposes (that is one of the ways we keep our horses in shape and paid for).
We would be looking to bring a mare up near the end of this summer or next spring (09). In other words, not a huge hurry, I will take my time to find the right horse.
Our little hobby horse farm goal it to have a limited number of horses at any one time (6 or less, all with a job other than breeding), and produce a nice baby every year or every other year (each of 2 mares would have at least a full year without being bred). Babies produced would end up being either 1. a sale prospect or 2. a barn addition as a nice lesson/lease horse in addition to a personal/family show/competition horse. One final goal would be for one of the foals over the next 10 years to become a replacement for, and improvement of Dez as the farm stallion. Dez would then be able to enjoy his time competing as a gelding.
That all being said, I like paint/quarter horses a lot, so that is what I am looking at for our farm. We have a nice 15hh qh mare. Now I am looking for a bigger paint mare to join the family.
*Prefer around 16hh (I don't like when people guess the height, and estimate way taller than the horse actually is. If they say 16hh, it should be a true 16hh. Let me know if there are red flags in this area)
*between 3-10 yrs old
*show record or Sire/Dam with show record/excellent prospect ok
*I like a nice big hip, nice neck, nice face
*good bloodlines are helpful
*I am not opposed to appendix or foundation bred
*bloodlines with known diseases that have not been tested for are red flags
*able to be competitive in variety of disciplines (WP, HUS, OF, etc.)
*not a big fan of blue eyes, but not a deal breaker
*prefer not to ship from east of mid-west unless horse is to die for
*prefer about $6,500 or less
SO....here are some mares I found on equine.com and dreamhorse.com under general criteria.
I would appreciate input from anyone to help me reduce this list. If I can get the list down to a manageable handful, I could request additional photos and info about the mares. Please, let me know about anything you guys think would be a deal breaker for one of the following mares.

I didn't have much time, so I just did a very quick glance at each horse, and so here are my most basic observations:
#1) Upright shoulder, downhill. Nice coloring though!
#2) I do like her build, but looks more English-oriented than Western. Hard to tell conformation with the saddle, but looks nice and stocky to me. Could bring nice size to your foals.
#3) Nice color, but I don't like her hip at all.. she has a very steep croup. Although she's 16hh, she's fairly fine, I'm not sure how much substance she'd bring to your foals.
#4) Yikes! Lots of white around her eye! Sorry I come from a Warmblood world, where white around the eye is not a good thing at all - horses that have white around the eye will get marked down during an inspection. Plus I don't like her neck.
#5) Very fine, won't bring a lot of substance to your foals. Looks Arab-y or TB-y.
#6) "has passed a recent vet exam" makes me wonder that someone had her vet checked, then said no for some reason..? Nice looking, well-built mare from what I can tell.. but these are terrible pictures to judge conformation from!
#7) I think this mare would bring great substance to your program! I like her! (Again, though, pictures aren't good for conformation!)
#8) Might be a little bit long-backed, but it's hard to tell from this picture. Nice looking mare though!
#9) I like her! She does have a pointy wither, but it's nothing I'd be concerned about. She is a littly lanky, but she is only coming 3, so might fill out...Pasterns might be a tidbit long.
#10) Can't tell anything from this picture, sorry. Looks loud-colored!
#11) At first glance, I don't like her, but it could just be the angle of the shot...
#12) I'd be wary of a horse with pink skin around the eye.. they sometimes have problems... but she's not bad looking, again, would like to see a confo shot... has the height and sturdiness you are looking for.. head might be a tad large
#13) I like her coloring! A lot! But again, not a good confo shot. Hooves look to be trimmed at different heights? or is that just an illusion?
#14) At first glance, I like her.. neck is a little skinny, but nothing training can't fix. Again with the pink skin around the eye... Nothing terribly wrong with her though..
#15) Can't tell much from this picture.. built downhill?
#16) Looks sway-backed, but there's nothing that jumps out at me at first glance..
#17) Long back! But nice coloring, nice stride!
Thanks JustDressgeIt!! That really helped a lot. I really like #7 also. I am going to write and ask for more photos tonight!
I got a reply from one seller that I had written before I decided to weed down the field, so I will post the new photos. The thing standing out to me most is that her neck is on the shorter side. Too short? Feedback is welcome. :)
As a yearling
My favorites are 6 and 7, I would post opinions, but I pretty much agree with everything that JustDressageIt said.
one thing i did notice about #7 is that she has Pretty Impressive and Page Impressive in her blood lines. Don't know if they are Hypp positive or negative, but i would get her tested if you are interested in her. I do love her coloring tho.
I noticed that also! I would definitely investigate that further before going forward with anything.
Here are a couple more of #6 from the seller:
#1 has been sold
glad to know AK. :D I do like #6 too. Her coloring is pretty.
#5 looks nice, but there's something about his back legs i can't put my finger on. It could just be that one photo when he was a yearling.

#20 - http://www.dreamhorse.com/show_horse...rse_id=1079612
add to list of candidates or no? I am not a huge fan of either, but am trying to include black/whites also...maybe the pictures don't do them justice?
i like 18 and 20. I totally LOVE #20's coloring.
Here are confo shots of #7
Please, anyone with feedback on the updated photos of #5, 6, or 7...would be very helpful. It is hard to have as good of an eye when you are looking for yourself (I tend to see the things I like). :)
