Help! Afraid of MOOSE!
Hi all, and I'll post a hello soon! But right now I really need some help with my horse and the moose in the area.
This is the first winter that we've had a horse, and recently the moose have been coming into our back yard to eat the trees there. When they are back there, our baby goes nuts!
I've searched for ways of gently persuading the moose to stay away, but would like to know if there's anyone out there that has some hands-on experiance. And if there's anyone who might be able to help me with understanding why our horse (Blue) gets so skittish when they are around. She's born and raised here (4 years old) and I can't imagine why she'd be afraid of them!!
I would really like to find a "fix" to this situation because I'm worried that she's going to hurt herself in her fits, or break out of the fence. Tonight she was almost ramming into the gate, on the far side of where the moose where. No ammount of calming, petting, talking, etc could calm her down.
Some other information:
She does have a stable, but HATES it and would rather have the doors always open, but does not go into it when the moose are around.
The moose usually come around late at night when we are sleeping, so we wouldn't know to put her in the stable to help her feel "safe", anyway.
Ideas online I've found for "moose-proofing"...moth balls in cheese cloth on trees, strong soap on trees, bull's blood (eww) and wolf urine (would probably freak her out even more), and bright colored plastic fencing.
Any ideas, thoughts, tips, suggestions and knowledge would be greatly appreciated!! THANKS!
