I'm just curious how much do you guys feed your horses because i've heard people say they feed their horses twice a week with feed and the rest is hay and i've heard lots of other things too.
See we feed morning and night at our barn and put out hay. But they have no grass really to graze on so i guess it makes more sense in our case but sometimes i think we feed alot compared to other people.
See this is our chart for each horse.
Junior-1 and a half scoops feed. 1 cup alf-alfa and one cup water
Peach-1scoop feed. 1cup alf-alfa
Joe-1scopp feed. 1cup alf-alfa and another scoop if he finishes.
Molly-1scoop feed. 1 cup alf-alfa
Mickey-1scoop feed. 1 cup alf-alfa. (sometimes just the feed)
This is the same for morning and night. Plus the mounds of hay we put out. Some of the horses are fat except one that is really skinny i think you guys have seen his pics before. So are we feeding too much?
I have no grass either, but I give just small cup of rolled oats mixed with mineral/vitamin, hand of boss and half-hand of corn twice a day. That's mostly for them to get mineral/vitamins and boss. Other than that just good quality hay.
I don't feed much besides free choice grass hay and 1lb.(more or less by weight of horse) of Purina Strategy once a day plus a vit/min supplement. They are all fat and healthy. They aren't being ridden much right now due to weather. In summer they are on good grass pasture so I reduce the pellet a bit. I feed in the afternoon, I just go check on everyone in the mornings and give them a cookie
My adult horses get grass hay twice a day, minimum 16 lbs per day, plus 1 lb of Purina Born to Win per day split into two feedings.
My old man (32 yr old spry thing) gets 12 lbs of Purina Equine Senior plus 1 cup of vegetable oil split into two feedings per day and soaked to make a mash since he's pretty well toothless. He also gets a small flake of hay twice a day just because he wants to gum some after his feed. But he never finishes it and just stands and dozes while the other horses clean up for him.
They are all on pasture as well and we are getting grass coming in again. Once the grass is in well, I will cut out the feed and hay for the young adults, but the old man will get the same Senior feed all year round.
we feed about 1.5 to 2 flakes of hay (oat of alfalfa) in the am and then the opposite in the evening ... i am trying to put weight on my mare so she gets about 3 decent handfuls of all in one with some vitamins at night as well.
well we just feed sweet feed but i forget the name of it...
We feed a pelleted complete feed and hay
**I used to know how much the grain weighed but I can't remember
Annie- 3/4 can of feed and 4 flakes of hay(to last her through the day)
Dime- 1/2 can of feed and 3 flakes of hay
Annie- 3/4 can of feed and 4 flakes of hay
Dime-1/2 can of feed and 4 flakes of hay(to last her the night)
Poco gets at least one square bail of alfalfa/timothy mix hay a day. For feeding hes gets:
TC Senior-6 cups dry (equals about 8-9 cups soaked)
Beet Pulp-3 cups dry (equals about 7 cups soaked)
He gets fed that morning and night. Equals approximately 2 gallons of feed each feeding.
My 2 boys are on hay bales all day long. My baby gets "Step One" which is feed made for babies. Other than that they don't get anything else.
Excuse my ignorance, but I'm new to horses.
What is a "flake"?
