hooves growing exceedingly quickly...
ok, well, My 5 yo Gelding gets trimmed when ever he needs it, which is nearly every month and a bit maybe sometimes even two.
Because i stopped fitting shoes to him and have also changed his diet to a more sporty type to help improve weight, his hooves just seem to grow like mad. For the last near 5 months i have been bringing out the farier when ever he needs his done. But i cannot afford to keep doing this as so because of money reasons. Is there any way i can stop the hooves from growing at this rate?
Oh and also i do not want to change the diet .....
what do you all think
Other than take the shoes off which can cause a little bit of wear off I'm not sure what else can be done.
Never heard of that problem before :?:
Yea, his hoof growth is because he's on a good, nutrient filled diet. Not much you can do besides try to let him get more exercise to wear those hooves down in between trimmings. If he has good feet, they can be a little long. I bet his mane and tail are long too!
If you have him in a small paddock during the day, you could put a layer of what is called "crusher dust" in my area. It is a mix of fine sharp gravel and sand. Walking around on this all day acts like an emery board to horse hooves. Constant filing keeps the hooves worn down between farrier visits.
isnt that normal
cut them more often, plain and simple.
