My horse is an escape artist
Ok so heres my deal with my 2 1/2 year old quarter horse Reeo. He has been pasture boarded his whole life and never had any problems until i moved him to my house. He did great for a while and surprisingly did awesome when his companion went away for training for 3 weeks but once our mare got back he started breaking the fence and getting out. He usually doesnt go anywhere but just this morning he was out again. Thank God i have the best neighbors and he put my horses up for me and fixed my fence. Reeo has been escaping just about every day for several months. I have just a normal t post and wire fence with 2 strands. I went out today while my kids were napping and added another wire to make it 3 strands. We have a strong box but it doesnt seem to effect him the least little bit. Im concerned that he is going to get hit by a car. Anyone have any advice for my situation?
Also i just put a saddle on him for the first time about 2 weeks ago and he did amazing. did not even flinch. He is taking the bit perfectly but its difficult for me to work him as i dont have a round pen. I will gladly take any suggestions for training him too. He is a very laid back horse. He really thinks he is a dog.
By strong box do you mean a fence charger?
If so, do you know it is working? Have you put a tester on it to make sure?
So many things can go wrong with an electric fence which cause it to not have much of a jolt.
The bottom line is, you have to make a fence that contains your horse.
He has proven that what you have will not work.
yes we check it on a regular basis. i walk my fence every day to try and fix the problem before he gets out but pretty much he breaks the bottom wire and goes under the top one. this has been an ongoing battle for a while and im starting to worry about him roaming.
You may just have to deal with the fact he is not an electric-fence horse. You might have to change to black board fencing... a pricey investment, but surely his safety is worth it!
Also, is the mare driving him out of the field? Being aggressive, etc?
The mare isnt the least bit aggressive except while shes eating. they really have an amazing bond between the two and im really going to hate when my sister sells her mare. i really think Reeo will be depressed. I have a lot of the fencing tape but i dont know much about it. Do you need special insulators and a special electric box? if i can afford it then i may just convert everything to the tape which was what i wanted to do in the first place but i couldnt get the information i needed for it in time so we had to make due with wire
We have a tester and check it regularly
Most inexpensive units will short out if a single weed contacts it.
some horses just will not respect an electric fence. My friends gelding and my gelding would just plow threw them no matter how strong the charge was. You might have to go find some inexpensive panels (there are some inexpensive panels around lol, like used ones) or some other type of fencing, but if you dont have the money for it, then i dont know what you can do. Maybe add more strands???? i dont know
we used to have horses that pulled the electrical wire / tape down and chase each other with it.. they never respected it because they could barely feel it. keep in mind these are big animals. a little shock doesn't scare them. if it's a cheap system it feels like a vibrate.
