Bat/Whip VS. Over Under

Which would you rather see people us in barrels?

I rather see them use leg. I find a bat easier to use though, especially for newbies.

The way i see it, is they are already going balls out!! Same with on the race track. What, do they got a little reserve speed that they put aside that only comes out when their gettin their ass whipped! No, their already going BALLS OUT!! Whats the point? I have never seen a horse pick up speed from being whipped.

Well actually I have a few horses(mostly OTTBs) that need a little extra encoregment(sp) to get moving after the last barrel so I use an over under and sometimes a whip if I can't find a over under in the trailer.

Short answer, yes, there are some horses that run faster when encouraged with a whip or over/under. My horse needs a little encouragement from 2 to 3 sometimes.

what is an over/under?

Neither. If your horse doesn't have the heart to give every ounce he's got and 15 more he didn't when you ask with your leg, then he will never be a champion barrel horse, no matter what you whip him with.

The over/under (or over and under, or however you're supposed to type it ) is a length of leather or rope that attaches to the saddle horn. The rider picks it up and uses it on alternating sides of the horse.

I detest seeing BRs using whips of any kind. It not only looks messy and amateur, it shows a lack of training. I don't care how fast the horse needs to go, you should be able to send them that message with leg, seat, and voice.

Well actually I have a champion barrel horse that is trained to turn deeper around a barrel with a tap of a whip.
