what do you use for bedding and stall boredom.
I recently had to move my horse into a stall at my stable since I can't afford $200 on board. So I have a stall with a turnout and can put my horse out in pasture for a couple hours and back in..doesn't sound bad to me.
Annnnyways, I am using pine shavings right now...It's a big bag for $8. Since winter is comnig is there any way to get shavings or something for a lower cost? A back will last me 4 days.
I was wondering if I should put one full bag in and clean daily but only clean the spoiled areas...would this be a waste? My horse eats straw so I can't do that. Is there any cheap ways to do bedding?
I got a toy for her yesterday incase she gets bored. What do you do for boredom?
I buy all my shavings in bulk. A tandem truck load costs me around 150 bucks w delivery, and it lasts me about a month. Compare that to the $2400 I would spend on bagged shavings in a month for 10 horses (that is if I only used one bag/day) WAY cheaper going bulk!
As for boredom.....I keep old zev and supplement bottles, tie them up on the stall w some baler twine, and the horses love playing w them.
Another thing that is great is soccer balls! I have a soccer ball in some of our horses stalls, and they absolutely love playing w those as well. Just have to make sure they are inflated well so that they cant grab on to them and chew them lol....I just find they are way cheaper then the Jolly balls you can buy and do the same thing.
And for my "beavers" in the barn, I toss a piece of birch tree (cut into a chunk of about a foot long w about a 4" diameter, and they like chewing on that, and that way they don't chew on my stall walls n doors!
Saw mills like mentioned above. You can get it delivered sometimes or go pick up a truck load.
The best toy out there for stall boredom is the Amazing Graze. I got one for my draft, then everyone else started getting them. They are spendy but well worth the money.

If you buy it in bulk from a saw mill or a furniture place be sure that they can guarantee there is no black walnut in there.
I am confused, is it cheaper where you are to be on stall board?
I have found that the cleaner I keep the stalls the less bedding I waste. The more times per day that you pick them the better. If you can only get there once then do as you described. Pick out all the manure, leaving as much clean bedding as you can. Remove the wet spot and you are done.
Stall boredom can be dealt with by making sure your horse has hay in front of it for a longer time. A small hole hay net will slow your horse down and give them a challenge at the same time.
