Went out to feed the horses and apparently Annalie broke through the big sliding door and somehow managed to get into the grain room (which was shut and locked, she's known to break things). She got a hold of about 1/4 of a bag of pellets and half a bail of hay. Arabella could have gotten some but I doubt it because Annalie doesn't share well. I called the local vet and didn't get answer but left a message (surprise surprise) so I called the next vet and he is already on an emergency call. She's in her stall with water and hay....What do I do?
Edit: I might add that this is the Haflinger who is already overweight.
How much of that feed does she normally get at a feeding?
In other words, is eating a 1/4 of the bag (12 pounds) of grain a huge increase over what the thing normally gets?
Joe, sounds like you've done everything right so far. Now it's a waiting game.
If she consumed an overabundance of food she could develop laminitis, but I know you're already aware of that.
Sit tight, and wait to see what the vet has to say.
A gigantic increase, she gets maybe a 1/2 a cup a day.
If you are worried you can start cold hosing or ice booting the front feet.
Ok vet just called back. Said I had to stop by and get bute.... I'll let you guys know what happens.
If she does have a laminitis episode, you are going to want banamine - IV ASAP.
As was mentioned - Cold hose and ice! Do not let the heat build her her hooves.
I am with MLS, I am a little surprised by the bute thing. Let us know what the vet says.
I was surprised by the bute thing too. I thought bute was for pain. I shouldn't go get it then..?
