I have thios Arabian mare that my 4h advisor gave me to train. She is 8 years old and green broke. I broke her to everything but to the halter. She is extremely spook (obvously) she is willing to learn tho and just doesn't know better. But i hate her. We have already dropped 500 on her because she caught her side on a door latch. She just destroyed a 150 blanket. She kicks the stalls, she is a horrible stall keeper. Not to mention we are spending tons on putting weight on her. She is getting to be a real big pain in my neck. Its not like i can't train her, she is trainable and workable its just i hate her. I don't want to work with her. My 4h advisor wanted to see if i can train an arabian. Sure i can, i have so far she is doing great under saddle. But i don't like her. If i sell her i would be letting down my advisor. But then again i would gain money and get another QH. What do you think i should do? Should i sell her?
I can not imagine owning a horse that I hated (or even just didn't love). I have a friend who got a horse she did not like and that totally didn't work out and now she can't even seem to sell him.
If I don't have a bond with my horse then what is the point. I ride because I love horses and I love my horse, I would not ride consistently if I did not.
If you hate the horse you will also not be very patient with it so may turn more aggressive to it than you want, without even realizing it.
(though the reasoning of her ripping up a blanket is a bit silly, my new horse rips all his blankets to shreds)
If you hate her, why keep her? It isn't fair to you or the horse. Horse's aren't stupid and I'm sure she knows that you hate her. She's never going to turn into the horse you want if your expectations/opinion of her is so low, so continuing on with her would be pointless, IMO.
Since your 4-H adviser gave her to you, are you sure it's okay with him/her that you sell the mare and keep the money for yourself?
Well it was another person who gave me her. But it was the advisors idea and such. I don't know for some reasons i feel i should stick it out. If i want to train for a living i have to learn to work with horses don't get along with.
Not to be rude, but if you want to train for a living it's probably not a good sign that you hate this horse. I've worked with horses that I did not exactly see eye to eye with but I wouldn't say I hated them. I just don't think it's a good attitude to have and I don't feel like you can be successful in an endeavor if it causes you so much grief. As I said, horses are intelligent animals (I have found that Arabs were even more intuitive than other breeds I have worked with, so it may be especially so in this case), and she knows you hate her, so she isn't going to work hard to try and please you. If you hate her, you don't respect her so why should she respect you?
If you want to train for a living, I would recommend turning away horses that you hate. Nowhere does it say that a trainer has to take in every horse that is offered to them and I think your reputation would suffer more if you constantly are battling with a horse you hate rather than if you turn a few away now and then. Perhaps you should advertise yourself as a "quarter horse only" trainer since this experience seems to have soured you towards the Arabian breed as a whole.
I should learn to work past it.
I would stick it out for awhile.
Try not to think negatively about her and realize that you are both learning together.
Give her a chance. :)
I'm don't think that I'd keep her. I know from experience that if you and a horse don't see eye to eye then that horse is never going to reach it's full potential. That horse knows that you dislike her and she probably dislikes you in return.
This has happened with me, and I tried to stick it out, almost turning both rider and horse sour.
sell her!! if you two dont get on things arent going to get better. some horses and people just dont mesh well. if she goes to someone that she clicks with well then she may reach her potential. i feel that keeping her any longer will maybe hold her back. she knows you hate her! remember that :D
but yeah i would say sell her and do it sooner rather than later. i would be more worried about letting a horse down rather than a trainer. im sure your trainer will understand and get over it
I voted to sell her!! If you hate her that much, and don't want to work with her, what is the point in keeping her! Horses are such sensitive creatures, and she will know that you hate her! I think it would be better for both of you if she went to someone who gels with her, because she sounds like she could make someone a very lovely horse :) I can't imagine hating a horse, yes there have been horses I haven't clicked with as well as others, but I have never hated one, and like the others have said, if she knows you hate her, she will not reach her full potential, so yes I think it would be better that you sell her on to someone who does like her :)
