I've recently purchased a new dressage bridle for myself. Admittedly, it wasn't the priciest bridle available, but I think that it will serve my purposes for the most part. Unfortunately the reins are an utter disappointment. They are thick, solid rubber. There is not even the most remote hope for any type of finesse using these reins. It's uncomfortable even to hold them in the appropriate fashion, excluding the pinky. I would literally have to hold the reins in my fists to use them.
So... I need to find another pair of reins to use... and I'm coming up with more issues than I could have anticipated. My favorite reins are flat, plain reins. No stoppers, no rubber. Lacing is alright, but still not my favorite. Does anyone know where I might find flat black reins for less than I spent on my bridle? I spent $80 on the bridle... and most of the reins I'm seeing are pitifully expensive.
Have you tried posting a wanted ad on your local craigslist or similar?
I had the same problem when I lent my bridle to someone and her horse stepped on the reins and broke them... I never did find a replacement.
Best of luck to you though.
Good idea on the craigslist.
Wow, it seems to me like someone who borrowed your bridle and wound up getting your reins broken would feel obligated to replace it!
Not sure how close you are to the border or if you are willing to cross it, but if so Greenhawk sells flat plain reins for like $25!
Hmm... appealing. I'm about half an hour from the border. How far is this Greenhawk place? Do you think Canadian customs will let me through just to get reins, or would they consider that fishy? :D They gave me a pretty hard round of questioning when I was going up to see a horse show last year.
Greenhawk is in Langley about 15 minutes from the border or so! I've never had an issue with customs but I think sometimes they just get bored...
Greenhawk does ship to the U.S. not sure how much they'd want in shipping costs though!
Connemara Flat Leather Reins - 5/8 In.-On Sale until Jan 31 2011 [RIE3355]
Neat, thanks for the tip. I was sort of kidding about customs... I'm pretty sure they'll let me in... I'm pretty harmless. ^_^ I just wasn't prepared for all of the questions they asked last time. It was quite a rapid fire and I had to stop and think about the answers. Suspicious much?
Apparently it wasn't so obvious to her. She was quite appalled when she moved her horse out of the boarding stable and I wouldn't give her my grooming kit because she used it while boarding here. She also ruined my cotton lead rope by tying the end through up near the buckle and using it as reins on my halter (after she'd broken my bridle, naturally). She also stole my (expensive) first aid kit and riding drop and a couple bits... Let's just say I'm not upset to see the back of her.
(Sorry for the novel, I find it humorous now though.)
