Clipping Black Legs?
I know you clip white markings, but I've also heard that you can clip black legs to make them look neater. Do or not to do? Also, leg clipping tips and tricks would be helpful. I've never clipped my horses and I have read about clipping legs, but if you have any tips that would make it easier, that is greatly appreciated.
My horse has 3 white legs and a black one. Naturally I have to clip all of them or it looks weird. Make sure you're clipping with the correct blade # don't clip it with a surgical blade (my vet did that to her horse - it looked hilarious for weeks) it will trim the hair far too close, but use something finer than a body clipping blade.
The horse's legs should be clean - cut off excess hair with scissors and shampoo (preferably with an antifungal shampoo) the night before - put them in the stall and in the morning they'll be ready to clip!
Make sure your clippers are charged, or you have enough cord, the night before. Make sure you have enough oil and spray lube. When clipping, I like to start with one leg held up until they settle. You might have to be very patient if the horse has not had legs clipped before - it took me 2 weeks the first time with my horse, doing a little every day. With older horses I usually budget an hour or two. Anyways, I clip against the hair, the whole way up to the knee/hock. You can try to blend the line between clipped and unclipped, but I make a clean line. I clip higher on the front legs, and lower on the hind legs because it helps make the legs looked proportioned. And I angle the line so it is clipped higher in front than behind the leg. You can kind of see the line in my DP, on his hindlegs at least.
But good luck and budget extra time!
If it helps, my horse has no white markings, so his legs are all black.
