Back in June when I bought my gelding, Cherokee, he was jet black. Now, towards winter, his muzzle is brown! And not a dark brown either, like a light bay color. And there are some other parts of his body that are doing the same thing. Like right behind is rib cage and just above the white on his legs. Why is he doing this?
Oh, and why does his eye do that?
i'm pretty sure hes a seal bay
The eye looks like sunburn.
As for his colour, to me it seems he isn't really black, but dark brown instead. This would show in the season change from purely dark to lighter with the mealy muzzle and flanks.
That is so weird. He turns sooooo dark in the spring thru summer. Then now he's turning light. What a turd. Oh well I don't really care if he's black, or brown or seal bay! I still love him just as much!
And what do you suggest for sunburn?
I would also call him a brown horse. Sometimes they can appear black until they get some winter fuzzies as they tend to be lighter in certain areas like your boy.
A fly mask would probably help the weepy eye, giving protection from sun and flies. Black Oil Sunflower Seeds might help with coat condition and color, about 1/2 cup in with his feed.
