building a barn
my husband and i will be building a barn with in the next few months.....4 will have 4 stalls, a hay room and a feed tack room, once i have the design i will post it, but just wonderingf you had the chance to build a barn what would it look like?
I am actually getting the chance to re-build my barn. I need to get my plans scanned and share them. My old one was 36'x120' and had 20 box stalls in there :?. Great if you are showing a ton of horses but pretty impractical for someone like me. My new one is going to be 36'x100' with a 12x12 tack room in the Northeast corner, the rest of it will be open inside. The entire south side will be open to the outside and I will be using pipe panels to make horse runs 10 or 12 feet under the overhanging side and about 20 feet outside.
Well, two things I've learned since we built our barn:
1. Drainage, drainage, drainage. Make sure your site is set up for good drainage. We've had to go back and do a lot of things to fix our drainage issues since the KY clay soil doesn't drain worth a flip. It would have been a lot easier if we had prepped the site better with some gravel or something.
2. We have a log home with a brown metal roof. We wanted to put a brown metal roof on the barn, but weren't able to get the same color without a lot of hassle. So, we ended up using plain old silver corrugated sheet metal. We're so glad that we did it that way. Our barn is probably 10 degrees cooler than it is outside in the summer because the roof reflects the sunlight so well. The brown roof would have been terribly hot!
