Uh oh mites! help?
Both my ratties have mites. I gave both a bath with anti-bacterial soap like I always do and let the soap sit a little longer than usual this time. They still have them though. I put them on fresh bedding which will be changed more now and other than that I'm not sure what to do? I'll call my vet in the morning but I don't think he only does dogs and cats.
When I had a snake a few years ago and he had mites we coated him in olive oil and let him just chill in the bath rub for 15 minutes. It's supposed to suffocate mites. That's for snakes though. Do you think the same method would work on rat fur? I also read to give them Ivermectin like horse wormer but that sounds a bit extreme and how do you dose that to a rat when it's in a huge horse tube?
Neither rat is sickly or lethargic or anything, just a little itchy.
Can you see bugs on them or not?
If you can see actual bugs on them (little red things that move), they aren't mites they are lice. If they are scabby and losing hair, but you can't see anything, then mites.
In the case of lice. You can treat them with advantage (for dogs or cats, we used cats because we had it), one drop around the shoulder blades.
Now if I remember right. Advantage won't treat mites, but Revolution will. Revolution you may have to go to a vet to get.
Ivermectin will I believe treat both mites and lice. For dosing you can squeeze some out onto a plate, and get it into a dose about the size of an uncooked grain of rice.
Yepper,a dot of kitten Revolution and Ivermectin. Lunar has it right.
Ok thanks! Yeah then I guess they have lice. gross. I was really hoping I didn't have to go the olive oil way, although it could have made them extra silky smooth afterwards. I'll get some drops from my vet.
