Went to the rescue today... What a horrid...

I went to the rescue today to drop off some donations, and asked them about those horses they took in in Sept. It was published on our local forum: they were in such bad shape the rescue never seen before (in fact they did 24/7 monitoring of those horses in stalls for couple months).

So they showed me the one of them. OMG! I've seen starved horses, but that was something I can't even describe. Poor horse is in sling to support the weight (because he fell and couldn't get up, kicking himself in attempts to get up), I believe with IV, etc. Skinny is not a right word. And the rescue volunteer said he's looking MUCH better. I can only imagine how he looked when he just came in. It's a miracle he was still alive (and the horse is just 7!).

What drives me crazy though is the WV person who starved them got just a slap on hand (I believe just $1000 fine).

Here is the story (and I'm sure they'll appreciate donations too  ): DAYS END FARM HORSE RESCUE - DEFHR - LISBON, MARYLAND

I posted about those horses. They are the ones that were taken from Hidden Meadows "rescue" along with 50 something others? I'm glad they are in good hands!

Oh, I see. I don't check all posts, so missed it somehow. Yes, part went to DEFHR, part to HorseNet, and part to Gentle Giants. I know all 3 rescues and I'm sure they'll do everything possible to get them back to health (and training!). At least some of them will have a future!

I don't care that you posted this, lol. I was just wondering if it was the same event.

What is the deal with horses being rescued from rescues??? Makes me sooo angry, angrier than when they are just taken from bad homes. Rescue centres of all places! Not the first time I have heard of such a story. What the hell are the owners doing, writing the centre off as a tax credit and leaving the horses there to die?

Sarah, I think it's just that so many people go into rescue with good intentions, and then get in over their heads very quickly.

Instead of asking for help or being proactive and finding other homes for the horses, they keep thinking a miracle is going to happen.

Plus, a lot of people who go into private rescuing are hoarders. Being that it's a form of mental illness, they think they're the ONLY ones who can care for the animals even when the living conditions are deplorable, and the animals are being neglected and starved.

Days End is one rescue I've always believed in. They do good things.

^^Agreed, you would have to be mentally ill to look at a horse in that condition in your own backgarden and not see a problem.

Days end is a VERY good rescue. Though they are a bit away from me, I suggest people look into their horses quite frequently. They are a real rescue who ask just as many questions about you as you will about their horses. They do *great* work there.

If the horses are in such poor shape why not just put them down? Maybe it works to get donations but it seems to me that it's quite cruel to the horses and a waste of resources.

Exactly. It makes me so mad when I see it, and it's true not only about horses, but dogs and cats as well.
