- - Too Late?

I am wanting to buy an older(12-13) mare. She is fine on the leadline and stuff.. but is it too late to teach her actual showmanship? IE., parking out, gaiting in hand, turns, etc.?

Not at all. If she gaits well undersaddle it should be able to translate to the ground pretty easily. Sounds like fun!

No, she's not too old.
Horses can learn new things well into their senior years.
At 12/13 y/o, she's hardly what I'd consider aged anyway.

She'll pace as big as the day is wide. XD I might be able to pull her into a.. racky.. thing.. but I *doubt* she'll do any hint of a running walk in hand. XD But I only do 4H showmanship. No biggie.
She doesn't like where I have to stand for setting her up, etc. She *knows* that she is supposed to be throatlatch to shoulder, and she *WILL* stay there.

I always taught mine to gait in hand using double long reins and a surcingle. Always start with a flat walk. A good flat walk is the base for a great running walk. Slow her down and get her back to basics. When she paces, shut her down and start back up immediatly. Gaiting in hand can be difficult because some horses tend to look for extra balance in the bit and bridle.
Teaching to stretch out for the park is pretty easy. Get her back legs square. Pull her wither towards you and tap with your toe at her fetlock area. If she doesn't move, pick the leg up and place it about 6" ahead of where it was. When she bares weight on it, give her a cookie and a pat. Do the same with both sides. It takes every day practice and dedication but eventually when you grab her withers or tap her elbow and say "park" she should climb into it. I like a horse in a park to be pushing up into it. Leaning on the forehand. To encourage that, once she is in her stance, hold the lead up high and a bit forward. She should lean but not move from her stance.

my girl has started showing at age 12/13 and doing very well :) our in hand work needs a bit of working on though, she's not as "showy" as your normal in-hand arabian
