OK so Sheena has a longish mane, and I don't want to cut it.
We are doing fairly low level 3-phases, and I have been putting her mane in a diamond braid for all of the phases. I want to know if this is ok.
Also, I cannot do a running/andalusian braid on her because it just falls out.
I havn't had a problem yet with the diamond braid, everyone gives me compliments on it. But will this be an issue as I go to higher level shows? What do you do/would you do for a long-maned eventer?
THE ATTACHED PIC IS TO SHOW HER MANE LENGTH, EXCUSE HER TONGUE =) I dont have a pic of her mane in the diamond braid, though
hmmm its not that long, you could still do rosettes with it and they wont look too big but they will look big. I dont think that diamond braids are allowed at higher level. but i wouldnt know. How some the running braid falls out? and there is a good braiding techniques on horsewyes magazine site :D
her mane is too short & Thin, also when i running braid it her head is down, and when i ride her it is up so it makes it unwravel, as does the free walk.
oh that sux :(
what about rosettes?
I pulled up the current USEA rulebook and could find nothing about braiding guidelines. Technically braiding (at the lower levels I know) isn't even required, but most people still do it because it makes you look much more put together and it's a tradition.
Define upper levels? How high do you plan to compete with this horse? If it's not above Preliminary level I wouldn't worry about it. If you were planning on doing CCI/CIC *,**,*** then I would definitely think about making her mane shorter and doing the button/rosette braids. You would have to look up FEI regulations though since I believe those all fall under international level.
its not too long to rosette it. If its also a thin mane then it wont look like golf balls. Section it to about an inch wide and sew them in rather than roll them up and tie it with an elastic. I used to do my old horses mane in rosettes with his mane about the same length and as long as i sewed them in they looked fine.
Theres some good videos on youtube to teach you to sew them.

hahah thats where i leaned to sew them in :D
STRANGE- I can't go to prelim with her, shes 17 going on 18. I have been doing pre-novice, so I wont be going too much further, MAYBE novice...
I have tries rosettes, but i fail at them ,ill just try harder i supppose!!
I forgot another question I had. If I do the diamond braid, what do I do with her forelock? Button? Leave it free?
^Definatly button it. I would say pull it and then braid it up regularly, lol. It just looks alot nicer than anything else to me, and my barn doesn't allow long manes at shows. If you're at small shows just keep it out, it's not mandatory to braid anyway
