the new start
So as everyone knows I encountered a problem with my horse Beau. Well i took him out of the pasture after a couple of days and put him in the turnout instead.
When I went to go get him out of the pasture I decided I was going to let him come to me instead of me going to him and pissing him off. He just would not come up to me and it was annoying me. So i tried to walk up to him and he turned around, pinned his ears back and ran in the opposite direction. I eventually just stood back and he walked up to me(ears pinned) and let me put the halter on and lead him to the turnout.
So yesterday I decided that I was going to start the proccess of working him and I reread the other thread and decided to work him ground up. He was still in the pasture, I bridled him, ears pinned mind you, put the lunge line on him and started working him in the ring.
Oh and also I ended up calling the trainer I had brought in from the start and apologized for not letting him do his job and I also manned up for cursing him out and all he could say was "yeah fine." I ovbisously pissed him off real bad and now I feel like crap. He also said that he wishes me luck in whatever happens with the horse and gave me a number to another trainer in the area(whom i know very well). All i know is that I tried and I seriously hope that counts for something.
So here's the update of what ended up happening.
- i put a bridle on him yesterday - he had his ears pinned back the whole time i was bridling him but he dealt with it - i'm working him from the ground, up - he listened very well - although he had his ears pinned back the whole time - i worked him over some ground poles - i even put some cones down and worked him walk/trot in and out of the cones and during that he started to perk up and he stopped with the ear pinning - he threw a couple of bucks and even turned his ass into me kinda like "f*ck you biatch" and i wacked him with lunge whip - i promise you guys not hard but, enough to show him that if he does that, that's what he's going to get - he reared twice while on the lunge line and after the second time he didn't do it again but, i think that's because both times he reared i just worked his ass harder - so i'm pretty sure he's going to learn that, that's not the way of getting what he wants - :)
Best of luck to you. You obviously love this boy a whole lot and I think you've got the right idea to start over with him from the ground up. Don't let him get away with any sassy behavior, nip it in the bud from the get-go! You guys will have a great bond in the end. :)
Nope. Actually this guy I know personally he used to be a good friend of mine.
Does anyone think I'm on the right track again so far?
Sounds like a good re-start. You're ignoring the ear pinning which is good and correcting him in a timely manner when he acted up. It's kinda funny. Sounds like he suddenly realized he was having fun and decided to act out just to show you that you didn't trick him into enjoying his work. Just keep it consistent and you'll be fine.
Thanks. I thought the same thing and I was laughing thinking that a few days in the pasture was all he needed and than *BAM* he threw the bucks and the two rears and all I could do was laugh for a minute and I was like maybe not. But, yeah it was sort of to say "haha you think you tricked me."
Glad you found a good friend that is able to train your horse.
Is it the horse you have in your "horses" tab? I only ask because this is how you described him...Beau is a 20 year old thoroughbred that is a(n) absolute wonderful animal to be around. He'll put his head in your lap and just relax with you. Beau is 100% bombproof. Has been around kids, dogs, cats but, he hates thunderstorms...
