8 month old filly starting to kick
We have a gorgeous little filly that just turned 8 months old and this morning when we went to feed she kicked at my neighbor, she keeps her horses here. We have only owned her about a month and she is handled daily and has never done this before. She is a little girl with a big attitude, but is usually pretty easy to handle. What can I do to correct this behavior before it becomes a habit for her? Any advice is greatly appreciated. She kicked when the neighbor was walking up behind her to bring her in for feeding, the filly knows the neighbor very well as we usually work with the horses together.
Get after her right away! Have the person feeding her make sure she announces she's coming and carry a crop. If she goes to kick or bite pop her swiftly on the butt. She is at the age where she will test you until she figures out her manners. It is very normal. But don't let her get away with anything or it will get worse!

Carry a crop with you whenever you know she will be around. Suggest a dressage crop length at least. If she kicks you or attempts to kick you by pinning ears and backing up a bit slap her on the but with it and stomp foward with VERY dominant attitude. This will mimic a lead mare in the heard with a bite and chase her off. And do NOT give her the feed until she behaves herself. The last thing you want her doing is associating kicking with get food. Need to remember though she is not getting into the age where she is going to test everything she can to see what she can and cannot get away with. Figure her as a 2 year old child. But if you nip this in the bud now rather than later things will be much easier for you when she will begin her serious training.
