Hi all I have a question about this... I have read that this happens in Quarter horses and other breeds of horses I have also read that this is common in stallions. I have a QH mare and I noticed that it looks like she bit at herself on her right side hip until it started bleeding. would self mutilation include when a horse rubs themselves until it is raw? the only thing that has changed is she got into a bucket of feed and we think she was close to colicking but she never did and our schedule has gotten really hectic and we haven't been able to go out there and spend as much time with them and we also seperated the horses for a about 2 days about 2 or 3 weeks ago and she bit at herself 3 days ago
lol hopefully im pretty sure of it but it doesn't hurt to ask. I know she was bored or stressed because thats why she ate like 10 to 25 pounds of feed thats when I had the horses seperated..
I think yall are right this is just the first time I have seen a horse chew themselves to where it looks like it was a deep cut I'v seen horses rub themselves raw but never chew themselves like that, and I didn't know if the different stress factors were a contributing factor to this.
