Quick blanketing ?

Well here comes the "crap"! This morning is drizzle and about 40 degrees. In about 2-3hrs the temp is going to drop. I really want to blanket my older mare but she will be damp from the rain. I'm nervous that she will get chilled from the temperature drop and being wet. What to do???? We have no way to get them inside. And we deal with this EVERY year, and they seem to survive but gosh it hurts me to see my mare shiver!!! I was thinking of drying her off with a towel but that will only lay her hair down and make it worse. Any ideas?

Do you have any stalls or shelter that you can put her in until she dries? I give my horses hay and let them sit in the stall until they dry if I want them to warm up.

Could you under lay a wool cooler, under the blanket, until she dries? I assume that her blanket breathes, one way, like Goretex.

Or, in the old days they would but straw or hay under the blanket to obsorb water and keep the blanket lifted off the body until it dried.

Give her free-choice hay. Horses tend to warm up quicker with full tummies.

Like the above posts state, if your blanket is breathable, your mare should dry off as she warms up. I have come out to blanket my horses after they are already wet, and they are usually dry in a matter of hours after the blanket is put on.

It might be a bit tedious, but could you try some sort of fan/blow drier on a heat setting?
