Fitting a colt for halter
What are some of the best ways to work off a hay belly and getting butt and chest muscles built up? I try to lunge him everyday to help get him fitted for a halter show in Jan, but does anyone else have other ideas? He is a weaner so I am kinda limited, but what do other people do to get that nice fit look? I also just feed him plain oats, should I add anything to that or feed him something else?

some of the pics of weanlings and yearlings you see in mags that have HUGE chests and HUGE rumps are all from steroids. muscle like that in young horses does not come natural like that. i deff do not suggest you doing this. natural is way better. just keep lunging if you have hills work him up and down the hill that will add some definition to his rump and chest. im not to sure about diet. hopefully someone else will chime in with some experience in this area

Thanks, I know that is not natural. Plus I don't want that look, he's a miniature, I should of clarified that first (:

I would be careful how much you lunge him. If he is still just a baby, this can be stressful on his joints. Free-lunging in a large arena would be much better....BUT even then, limit it to him getting the extra out...and not making him go on forever.

Go for walks with him, yes, a walk like a dog. This will give you both practise on squaring up if you stop randomly on your walk.

Thanks for the advice. And yes he is lightly lunged. He doesn't have a lot of go to start with and when he is done,HE IS DONE hehe. I talked to a breeder and he has a treadmill with an incline to get them in shape. It is one made just for minis, but he said it's loud and they often spook and try to bail out =/

Heres my boy,Sonic at 4 months about:
