Does this feed plan sound good for a 2yo?
I'm bringing in an underweight 2yo appy filly. She's 14.3hh and growing. At any rate, I've been switching my chunky monkey mares over from SafeChoice to TripleCrown 30%. I also have free choice alfalfa/grass mix (was orchard but talking to vet and hay man the straight grass mix was better with our pasture - or lackthereof) that is out 24/7.
With the filly I was thinking of feeding the 30%, mixed with timothy/alfalfa pellets, and a cup of flax. She'll be blanketed because of her weight. I plan on feeding three times a day with her, which is why I want to add the hay pellets cause then I can give the other two hay pellets without them bothering her not that Cinder would but Cindy on the other hand acts like she's been starved to death
Anyway - thoughts?
Be sure you are feeding the recommended amout of the TC30% for her nutritional needs... I would prob add in a bit of rice bran for the added fat in place of the flax
Do you know where I can get bran from?
you should be able to get Rice Bran from about any feed store... ask for Manna Pro Max E Glo :)
Ohh I saw that! Thanks again! You're my feed champ :)
we will have to get together next year and ride!!!!
Ohh definitely! Cinder is going to the trainer in late Jan/Feb so she'll be refreshed in time for some miles.

I have had better luck with flax than rice bran. I have tried both, and IME, flax works better hands down. 1-2 cups is a good amount for weight gain.
The free choice hay, TC 30%, and flax are probably enough to get her weight going well. The added hay pellets sure won't hurt any and may help as well.
You've already got a good plan going from the sound of it, I just wanted to drop in and say "I told you so".
Horses are like potato chips, you can't have just one or two.
Flax = 1900 calories per pound
Rice Bran = 2400 calories per pound
