To braid or not a Friesians Tail
I normally leave her tail natural and have turned her out in the pasture for the winter. I think she may have stood on it while standing up as a big chunk was torn off.
I read that if you braid them you should redo it regularly and it is supposed to be very cold so I would not be vigilant at redoing it if the weather is bad. Tonight after some freezing rain the buttom part of her tail was a frozen mess. I really am not sure if I should leave it or braid it. Looking to hear from others in cold climates that pasture there long tailed horse
Idk,but i usually always have my horse tails braided in winter. I left my ponies tail braided about a month and it has been raining a LOT. I went to check her today and unbraided her tail and about 90% of the entire (very long and thick) tail fell out! :( im so sad. It iwas probably rainrot. If you braid it check it regularly at least. I dont know if/when my ponies tail will grow back :(
I leave my Friesian's tail loose and he's gotten things figured out pretty well. But if you're finding it a problem, you can always do a loose braid in a tail bag. Redoing it regularily will be important as if she starts rubbing it, will do more damage in a braid. That being said if you braid just from the dock down, and tail bag it - you'll have less chance of her rubbing (As the french braid can get itchy for them if it's tight).
