mare or gelding
I have a QH mare and have a chance to trade for a nice gelding.I have never owned a gelding and was wonder in general which do you prefer.

Doesn't matter to me the gender, it is more about the personality.

I personally prefer geldings. they tend to be calmer in general and easier to train & a better nature, thats just in my experience anyway. but yeah i agree with Alex, depends on personality.

i went and rode the gelding.he was very calm and a pleasure to mare is calm most of the time just not all the time like when shes in season.I like the idea of a gelding cause it seems to me that the wouldnt be as moody as a mare.

KawaiiCharlie 12-16-2010 09:51 PM

Yeah mares tend to be moodier than geldings, and with a gelding you wouldnt have to worry about them grumpiness when theyre in season lol

I've always worked better with geldings. It may all be in my head, but I just seem to click better with them.

It's definitely a matter of personal preference. Obviously each horse is different, but mares tend to lean toward the more sensitive, moody side where geldings tend to be more what I like to call "aloof" in that they just go with the flow

I love my mares and have no issues with them. I think alot depends on the horse and its past. We had a QH gelding and he was an absolute beast to deal with. He also was very hard on my Draft. I do not normally ever get ride of any animal I own, he was the first.

You can look at either one as having positives, which actually can both be turned into negatives if you flip the side of the coin.

Geldings: Consistent/Dull
Mares: Heart/Hormonal

I have a mare, but she is very laid back. The general consensus I hear is that geldings are quiet, but too quiet for some people, those people usually like mares. Mares can have more "try." It's why you see so many more polo pony mares than geldings. They'll run themselves into the ground when a lot of geldings go "meh." However, as some people have said, each horse is different. Stereotyping horses, or lumping them all into one category, will only get you so far and is certainly not fool-proof.

It really depends on the horse and the person. As for me, mares all the way for the reasons listed by RomanticLyric. I don't think I will ever own a gelding again.
