Clicker Training - anyone do it ??

I have a clicker and have learned all about clicker training for dogs. I know there's people out there that clicker train there horses ... just curious if any of you do and what the pros cons are for you ?

Plus, George is showing some unwanted behavior and I'm curious if some kind of training like this might even help with that. Here's my post about his behavior issues :

I was going to do clicker training with my mare. The reason I didn't is because it is so food based and she gets really pushy around food. Also it can lead to biting habits.

you may want to read some of Karen Pryor's books on clicker training, she was one of the founders of clicker training and has done alot with horses. her book reaching the the animal mind, had at lest one or two chapters on horses.

typically clicker training is used with food however it is a conditioned reinforcer so you could get creative a use a toy, petting or some other means of reward to train your mare MarleyandEllie :D

I clicker trained my horse to "play fetch" or mostly just pick up objects that I want him too. I haven't done it in awhile but it was a blast!

If they are pushy on food, try doing round pen exercises with a bucket of feed in the middle.

they go near the food make them work or move their feet... pretty soon they will get the idea to remember who the alpha is in your herd

I bought a few clickers to use on my mare but never got around to it. I wouldnt hesitate to try it though. It's great for unconfident horses because they get a clear answer on whether they did something right or wrong.. Granted that you're consistent with it.
