Hoof Lameness
My mare has been on and off lame for four months. When she first came up lame, she was three legged lame! I took her to the vet immediately, did xrays and a nerve block, after all said and done the vet believed an abscess was the culprit. After three weeks or so the abscess didn't blow (even after soaking, poulticing and wrapping, farrier visit)...then all of a sudden she seemed like she was getting better...she hovered on "getting better" for a month and half...I had the farrier out again and she was sensitive on her foot and the farrier believed she found some bruising. Just recently the farrier was out again and there was a hole at the front of the hoof/toe and my horse was not sensitive when the farrier touched it anymore. Therefore, we believed the abscess finally blew after this absurd amount of time!! We put on shoes to help bring her up off the foot and relieve some discomfort...she didn't oppose to the shoe at all. Now after a week, she is still quite lame!!! I am at a loss as to what to do next. Usually after an abscess blows there is relief.
Any ideas???:-(
Could the fact that she hasn't been worked in four months causing other problems? I don't even know where to go from here! I don't understand why this is taking so long to heal.

Is the hole still exposed ? Keep the hole cleaned out daily and treat it with some medication.
Maybe consider putting a pad in between the shoe and hoof till it is healed or it could be something else.

hoof lameness
hi Anvil
Thank you for your response....what kind of medication do you recommend? like betadine or something like that?

Yes. If you can find a medicated hoof packing at your local supply store or your farrier should have some.
What I use is kinda like play dough where you can fill up the hole but it will fall out after a while.
If you could do that morning and night it should help you a lot.
