conditioning half chaps
I just got a pair of smooth leather half chaps that i've had for a week and they're starting to get a bit stiff! I wear them all day long, riding 5-6 horses a day, walking through dry sand/mud, etc. In other words, they get quite a workout! Does anyone here condition your half chaps? I've always had suede in the past.

My leather half chaps take quite a beating too! Mine were very stiff when I first bought them, but after a week or so, they softened up a lot! I'm surprised you're having the opposite effect!
I clean mine every so often (definitely not as often as I clean my tack). First I get off all the caked mud with water and a rag, then I do a good cleaning with saddle soap. I've had mine for about a year and they just keep getting softer and softer. I've never oiled or used any type of conditioner on them...just "Leather New" which seems to make things soft enough.

That is kind of funny isn't it! What kind are they? Mine are Tredsteps. They were very soft when I got them and I"d like for them to stay that way! I don't mind spending $$ on my horse stuff as long as it's going to last. I'll try using some leather new and see if that keeps them soft. Thanks!
