opinions on Lucerne hay!
 

hey guys, this is probably already been asked before, but i cant seem to find it :( what is your opinion on lucerne hay? does it make your horse hot and fizzy? what kind of hay do you feed your horse to stay calm :) thanks guys :D x

The Americans call it alfalfa over there, do a search using alfalfa & there is a lot of talk about it on this forum.

I feed it about once a week, it is very high in protein & posphates I think from memory, but I mostly use oaten hay.

thankyou :) and does oaten hay 'fizz up' your horses, or is that just a common myth?

I feed 1/4 flake of alfalfa 2x a day with 2 flakes of grass hay to my guys. I find it helps with their coats
and they like it as a treat.

I've never known a horse to fizz up on oaten, mine is on 24/7 turnout but in winter I just top up with oaten when there is no feed on the ground, & just a bit of lucerne for a treat (not necessary at all) IMO oaten is the best hay.

Thankyou very much! I was just a bit confused as I went to a horse Feed place and they said that oaten hay will fizz up any horse and alfalfa (lucerne) will calm them down, Thank you for your opinion :)
