Doing your hair hunter style (Thick, short layers)
Okay, this is how I do my hair for AQHA shows. My hair is thick and I have a bunch of shorter layers at the top, which makes it harder to pull my hair over my ears. However, somehow combining the way that I used to do my hair (no hair over ears) and pulling hair over the ears made the perfect formula for me.
Here's my steps (hope it's not too confusing! I actually took pictures for most of it:-) )
2 thin hair ties
1 thicker hair tie (it actually doesn't matter that much)
Bobby pins (however many it takes to keep your hair in, if you even need them!)
Brush your hair out so there are no tangles, knots etc. This will make it easier to separate your hair.
(again, i'm sorry for sideways pictures!!)
Pull some of the top layer of your hair into a small ponytail on top of your head. Make sure you don't pull too much, you want to leave enough hair to pull over your ears.
Pull the hair that is not in the ponytail over your ears (as much hair as you want.. you don't want it to be too thin or too thick though) and secure it in a tight ponytail at the bottom of your head.
(This part is optional... It works for me because my helmet is a little bigger) Braid the hair as far down as you can, and tie it off with a thin hair tie.
(I could have braided down a little further)
Option 2 of step 4:
Flip your hair up, and spread out on top of your head. Apply bobby pins and hair spray wherever needed.
Flip the braid up on top of your head. Apply bobby pins to secure the braid, so it does not fall. Put the hair net over the braid, and over the hair over your ears. Make sure the hair net is tight along your head, because you don't want the hairnet or fly aways coming out of your hairnet and looking horrible. Hair spray, once again, is your best friend:-P
I really hope this helped a little bit for anyone that has had trouble with their hair.. I'm going to maybe to a video tutorial on how to do different kinds of hair, since that seems to be a hot topic on the forum.
Hope this helped!
I have a question. Why does it have to be over your ears? I find that extremely annoying and it makes me want to just bash my head against a wall. I'm not about to show in the AQHA hunter circuit, I was just curious.
Thanks so much! I will give this a try tomorrow.
And possibly another one about doing it in a bun? Who knows, I'll do whatever popular demand wants!
How is it "more huntery" to have your hair over your ears? I dont get it.....

It's tradition! Just what "hunter hair" is supposed to look like. :) (def not a growing trend) In fact we call them (the part over your ears) "patties".
So if it isn't a growing trend, maybe that's why I never noticed. I board at a large Hunter/Jumper barn and they host many LMHJA shows, and I've never noticed the "patties" lol.
Now if the Princess Leia hair style comes into fashion...I bet that'll be noticeable :P
