If I was too cheap to buy a cooler...
It's been really cold where I live, and when we get finished with 4H practice each week, we cool the horses out as well as we can, but they're still sometimes damp. We drive about 20 minutes to get them back to our property, then they're turned out. They have shelter, but are outside all the time. I don't want them to get chilled on the ride home.
First, is it important to cover them for the drive home, to retain body heat and/or to absorb the dampness?
Second, if I was too cheap to buy a cooler and instead wanted to use a blanket, like for a bed, what material should I look for? Fleece? A Quilt? Woven cotton?
Third, what size would I get for an average size horse? Queen?
I'm thinking of getting a couple of blankets and tossing them over their backs and securing with clothespins, the kind you hang clothes on the line, so there's no worry of pins coming loose and stabbing them.
These are not my horses, so I don't want to invest a lot of money and was thinking of just getting some blankets at a thrift store.
Most coolers I've seen are made out of fleece, but I think it would be just as expensive to get a fleece blanket. The cooler I posted below is $35. I spend about $30 or more making fleece tie blankets for friends or family.

if you use blankets tie them on a flopping blanket could be a bad wreak in a trailer.

I have had good luck with the waffle weave cooler sheets from Dover. They are not expensive.

For trailering though, you might want to go with something heavier, especially if your windows are open or you have a stock-type trailer with openings on the sides. I would go with wool or thick fleece. Something like one of these.

I used the coupon catalog's item numbers for many of the above, so those are extra discounted than if you just browse the web site.
Or you could use a blanket liner, like one of these.

Or a stable blanket, which is not waterproof, so it will breathe better to allow the damp hair to dry.
