How heavy is too heavy for a 42" Shetland? I have a question...... how heavy is too heavy for a 42" Shetland? I think she is about 42", because she is about the same height as my little brother at the withers. I want to know if it is okay for me to ride her, because she is one of the only horses I know that isn't a total problem! I weigh about 115 lbs., and she was absolutly perfect when I rode her (once!) bareback. An onlooker laughed when they saw me riding her. I think my feet were about six inches from the ground! :D |
actually i would like to know too. i think it just looks funny but considering that pound for pound they are the strongest horse breed in the world it should be fine. right? |
That is very true. |
If it's a Shetland Shetland pony it can carry more than an American Shetland. I googled because i'm curious too. Quote:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shetland_pony FYI: 9 stones= 126 pounds (( 1 stone = 14 pounds)) |
mmm very intrigueing. thomas is a pure shetland but i would have no clue whether that means he originates from shetland or not? |
Well Wikipedia says that the American Shetlands are taller than the other kind, and they also have a more refined look to them. Do you have any pictures of Thomas? |
I have a picture of Molly (the shetland). It may not be the best photo..... http://www.horseforum.com/userpix/30...ixed0005_1.jpg ...but maybe you can make something out of it. 126lbs.....I only weigh 115, so I hope she is what I think she is. She actually trotted for me today, while I was riding her. She even stood tied with just a rope around her neck! I think my feet are a foot off the ground, not six in. |
molly looks quite similar to thomas (ill put a picture below and hope it works *nervous laughter*) so thomas is registered as pure shetland. after reading that site obviously american shetlands are a breed in themselves and yea they look alot more 'horsey' than a typical shetty. http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d86/meryns_pets/a.jpg he is the black one, 10hh and i weigh 65kg. he takes my weight without blinking but has some 'emotional baggage' that we are sorting out before i risk fully sitting on him (the little rascal on the floor is pedro - mini x shetland . had him for 7 years now) |
you would be fine. |
