I am having problems fitting my big fat QH/appy gelding. I know he is going to need a wide or x-wide tree, but every saddle maker seems to have a different idea of what "wide" is.
Firstly, I would love some suggestions of saddle brands that make english eventing style saddles in genuinely wide fits.
Secondly, can anyone tell me how to measure my horse to determine what centimeter size tree he will need? I've seen wide trees anywhere from 31 centimeters to 40 centimeters, but I have no idea how to tell where my horse falls. I know how to take a wither tracing, but I don't know how to interpret it to tell what will fit.
Re: Saddle fitting?
I second Sunny, being this is what I do.......but when I go shopping I first take the wire and bend it across the withers forming an A/arc and on the back and where a saddle would stop.
Now take a good sized piece of paper and trace the INSIDE of the wire on the paper. I use a brown paper bag....trace each shape. Then cut out the shape you can also use good card stock paper.
Take this with you when you go shopping as a template.
Here scroll down...I found better directions. :)
