What do you think?
Looking to add a really nice, broke, horse to my pasture. I have four currently, all geldings. Two are keepers (Loki and Divo) and two are in training (Red and Squeaker). I want a good, not-crazy gaited trail horse that's capable of carrying my 220lb dad, he's experienced just doesn't ride much. So I've started the search!
Dad's only criteria is "No cr*p horses". It HAS to be a good horse and has to fit perfectly- right down to color. Saw a really nice sorrel, but downhill. I ride a downhill built Foxtrotter gelding at my friends place when we go on trail rides. Goes right into my knees, FANTASTIC horse, wrongly built.
Downhill - 'Fast' (it canters, OK, it gallops at the slightest touch, not okay) - 'Spirited' - Asleep/Dead to the World - Stupid (yes, there are incredibly stupid horses out there) - Over 15.2hh - Under 13.2hh - Spooky - Unbroke - Over 10 years - Under 5 years.
Good conformation - Normal minded - Calm, but perky (you know, moves out without a whole lot of kicking) - Is capable of learning - Not spooky - Decent age - Easy on the eyes - *Might* be swayed by a cute QH, if it has a smooth trot.
$1,500 is about my top level price. I won't buy anything under $800, either.
Has to be in or around Kansas City, Joplin, or Springfield MO.
So! Thats what I'm looking for :D Not a super does-it-all-and-lays-golden-eggs...just a normal one.
Pictures are all awful Craiglist stuff.
First up is this girl:
BEAUTIFUL TWH/FOX TROTTER - SUPREME TRAIL HORSE
Black and white TWH/MFT mare. Six years old, roughly 15.2-16hh. Very flashy, from what I read and talked with the owner about on the phone she's an excellent trail horse and is very calm. Asking $1500 OBO.
Do like: Temperament, color.
Don't like: That bit she's being rode in. If I ride in a shank bit, I like a short-shanked mullen mouth. Not a foot long ported oh-god-don't-touch-the-reins.
GOOD broke mare!! Rides awesome! Neck reigns, sporty and goes anywhere
QH / Belgian mare. 6-7 years old. Roughly 15hh.
Do like: Good looking, seems to be a good trail rider. They have owned her a long time.
Don't like: No mention of last time road. 'Fast' horse. Stockier then in the pictures (overfed...?)
QH, trails/barrels gray mare
QH mare - 6 years old - 15.2hhh - Asking $1500 OBO
Do like: Temperament, young.
Don't like: She's going to go white...white horses never stay white, white horses are usually dead set on turning themselves orange/green/rainbow  Seems a little too quiet.
Zane Gray Bloodline-Registered Fox Trotter
I'll admit - I am a total sucker for black horses.
6 year old MFT gelding - 15hh (roughly) - Asking $1500
Do like: Seems like a level headed horse, good age, nice to look at
Don't like: No conformation pics, nothing on how he loads or picks up his feet
So far the Tobiano mare is looking pretty promising. E-mailed the guy with the black gelding, haven't heard anything back yet.
Honestly the one i would most likely go for would be the first mare. Though there are no good confo shots, you can ask for some & she's really flashy.
She also sounds like a good horse & comes vet checked with records.
My second choice would be the second mare lol.
She's got a nice stocky build with nice coloring & markings. She also sounds like she could be very versatile plus an easy keeper ;)
Then would be the grey mare. I like that they say she goes with or without other horses as well as crosses water, etc. I can't stand herdbound horses! I prefer her overall looks the least out of the 4, though.
As for the black gelding, they dont have very good pictures and dont say much about him though he sounds like a sane enough horse.
I'd love to get another PH Ranch horse, same place where I bought Loki and Red, but they have NO good broke horses right now. All sold. I think they have one chestnut gelding but he's massive, something like 16hh.
They have several black Tobiano, beautiful Missouri Fox Trotter and Tennessee Walker mares. Not broke. They used to have a pair of stunning Palomino mares, broke to ride...one had this amazing mane that went past her shoulder. Both sold :-(
But! I shall now eagerly await a reply e-mail and stare at Missy :D
Oh my I love the tobiano! I would defiantly go for her! Beautiful! Would make gorgeous babies in the future too if you wanted!
honestly-they all sound good. If they aren't far, personally, I would go see them and try them. That is the only way you will know if the gaited ones are "pacy", if that pretty tobiano will be ok with a lesser bit, how forward they are, etc. You also know how your dad rides, etc. I agree about the grey going white, and I am not a fan either. You also have no idea-the tobiano may have shoes all around (which I am not a fan of) terrible feet, etc.....Good feet and easy keeper are huge on my list. As well as not buddy or barn sour as mentioned.
I really like the draft cross, altho I would prefer 1/2 and 1/2 myself.....drafts are really wonderful.
Good luck, and go see for yourself.
