POAs

I love love love POAs, or Ponys of the Americas. I own one, a chesnut 3 year old gelding named CR Sizzlin Jet Chex. Hes my baby, and although he has all characteristics he hasnt colored out yet so can't be shown. Hes currently in training to be my next trail horse and has a forever home with me : ). Im also leasing an 11 year old bay mare named Tough to Respect, "Wendi" is gorgeous and has been shown and used for lessons her whole life. She has light snowflakes over her whole body and the cutest little head! She is smaller than Chex and will be shown and used on trails this summer by my little sisters. POAs have me won over, they are all around great horses in a compact package and are perfect size for me (Im 5'3" and petite). Any other POAs out there, would love to see pics! Sorry I only have one pic of Wendi so far, shes new!

I love POA's! I plan to have at least one when I'm older.
Chex is such a cutie! And Wendi looks like a cutie too!

The blonde girl in the pics is one of my younger sisters. Those are a couple of her senior pictures, her and Chex definetly have a special bond.

What are POA's exactly? I only know the Horse of the Americas, I've never quite understood the qualifications for POA...

Answered my own question:

The standards Les and his friends set up were a real challenge to any breeder. To be registered as a POA, strict guidelines were followed. The pony had to be between the height limits of 44 inches to 52 inches. The head was to be small and dished as the Arab; the body was to be muscled as the Quarter Horse; and the coloring had to be Appaloosa, visible at 40 feet. This was to be a breed for children to ride and show. Adults could only show the animals at halter or with a cart. So these equines must also be gentle and easy to train.

What are the approved breeds they can cross to?

Beau Baby 02-05-2011 06:26 PM

I have a POA cross. We're not sure what he's crossed with, my best guess is either a Paint, QH or Appy since his old owner only ever owned those breeds of horses. He's 9 years old now and the Devil in pony form. No joke he's possesed by the devil. At least when I'm around he is. His name is Watson

To my knowledge POAs are usually products of small QH/appy crosses, but I know this varies. As long as they meet the qualifications then they are POA. Also Watson would be considered full POA if his cross was with appy or QH, just so you know. My boys pedigree is almost all appys and QH, I know its complicated, but thats how POAs work, its not about the breeding its about the characteristics.
