I worked with Blu today. I used a homemade surcingle and side reins which I've looked up. Blu did great with the ground work for walking and trotting and his headset was wonderful. But as soon as I asked him to trot when we were riding he would go crazy! It is really starting to bug the heck out of me when I can't see over his head. I am trying to teach him to go straight from a jog to a lope without him taking off or something. He doesn't need to move with his head in the air. I have been pulling and releasing when he lowers adn gives his head but what does he do? Pop it back up again. GRRRR! I am getting frustrated...any help?

Keep asking for his head.
Try holding steady with both hands, and pull straight back to your hip with your inside rein, and let him fight with the bit until he gives and flexes his head down and to the inside. Try this at a walk first, and keep him walking forwards - no stopping! Make him work up into the bit. (I will post a video showing what I mean this weekend.)
As for the cantering, try doing a small circle at a jog, then just as you're coming to the rail again, ask him up into a lope, and go straight along the wall - if he starts to speed up, do a circle - start off large and if he doesn't slow down, circle smaller. When he slows, reward him by letting him go large, and circle again when he gets rushy.

If Blu will even do that. Thank you JDI

another tip here for the side reins. Some horses will learn to lean on the bit from side reins, and that might be a problem too. Once when the side reins come off, he goes back to his crazy head popping.

I would look into some Vienna style side reins, or a lunging system (like Pessoa) and that will help him to not lean on the bit and will also help with building muscles and everything.

This is what I have

I have yet to use it, but it looks very similar to the pessoa. And Jazzyrider has something similar to that too, which she uses with her horses.

But i agree with what JDI said. Also, i would try the serpentines that AK has suggested numerous times

I tried doing figure eights and stuff. Blu get's to where he won't turn and will half-flex with his head in the air. What can I do? I know the judges will take points off in a show big time and I can't trot or lope with control. :(

i used my lunging system (the one from and Vega did great! When there was pressure on the bit she'd move her head up, and then when she brought it down, she'd have relief. And after a few attempts of lifting her head, she kept it low :D

I did this at the walk and trot, but only for a few minutes.

I think that will help Blu with accepting the bit and also engaging his hindquarters as well, and i think in turn, helping him with become balanced (which may be a reason why he'll trot and lope without control) and hopefully help with turning.

Honestly, i am very happy I purchased it. I have an extra one if you're interested in it

oooooooo! sounds good. Can you give me some info lol

appylover31803 04-11-2008 07:28 PM

on like how to use it? or for the extra one i have?

It comes with directions and it isn't too hard to figure out. It's quite simple, but just make sure that he doesn't mind stuff on his bum. Vega did great and she can get spooky at times. I also warmed up her in both directions before i put it on, and then i led her around a bit to get used to it before i briefly lunged her. You're only supposed to do it for a short amount of time because it builds the muscles and stuff. I think Vega only had it on for like 5 min or so.

When i go home, i'll take pictures of it. I'll take it out of the bag if you want, but i have not opened that bag yet. I'll include the shipping in your price too. I'm thinking between $25-$30? Does that sounds ok?

This is the link to it.

I'd like onfo on your extra please. hehe. :)

appylover31803 04-11-2008 08:16 PM

hehe ok.

Well it's un-opened. Im like 99.9% sure everything's there, but i'll check when i get home. I'd sell it to you for $30 shipping included.
I'll take pictures of it too, so you can see it and everything.
Umm. i don't know what else there is...
I just got it this year maybe like a couple months ago, so it's brandy new, and the place sent 2 of them (because i never got any tracking info on the first one i guess. I honestly have no idea)
It comes with directions and how to use it and such. It comes pre-assembled in the bag. The fleece stuff does come off, so i guess it's washable.
I guess anything else you want to know, just ask :)
