Raining Horse for Barrel Racing
My Horse is out of Shining Spark ( a rainer ) Does this mean I should stick to raining with my mare ? Because her and I ran the barrels a few months ago in the arena she she did great for her first time. My friends are telling me her and I should barrel race . I would love to start her this spring but I dont know if I should . Does it matter that she was bred for raining ?

Even if a horse is reining bred, it does not always mean that that particular horse will excel in it.

There are lots of TB's bred for racing, but they do not cut it on the track.

What did her sire do?

Welcome to the forum, Shiny. First of all, your horse is by Shining Spark - the term out of refers to the mare.

Regardless of what breeding she has, it's what she enjoys doing that counts. There is no reason in the world that your horse can't do well running barrels except that she doesn't do well at it.

I've had a few horses that were by and out of some pretty heavy duty cow horses but just did not do well team penning or sorting. Breeding is only an indicator not a hard and fast rule. If your mare likes to run barrels, then that is what you can do with her - reining bred or not.

Depending on how they are crossed reining and cutting bred horses do well in speed events. My Doc O'Lena stallion was crossed on several speed event mares. The resulting foals where quite nice and do well.

Reining and cutting bred horse have good rate and turn. They have a hard time in the speed aspect of discipline.

Athletic is Athletic. Reining horses tend to be VERY athletic. If she loves to run and is agile, then you will have a blast barrel racing!

Breeding is only one factor. I know a very nice barrel horse, 2D horse, bred to be a western pleasure horse. If your horse has the heart to do barrels then do barrels with her.

Some awesome barrel horses have been 100% cowbred. I know some awesome barrel horses that are even halter/pleasure bred!

I also have a reining/cutting bred 2010 filly that is my up and coming barrel prospect!

My barrel horse is ALL reining bred on her dam's side, she is short, stout and quick! She is so very athletic and brings a different snappier style to the pattern than the larger horses. She has been the best I have owned, personally I think reining horses make some of the best barrel horses!

my gelding is all cutting bred, Doc Bar on top and bottom, Doc's Hickory, Son of a Doc, Poco Bueno..and my mare is reining bred, Reminic, Doc's Remedy, Fillinic, and her dam's side is mostly TBs..they both love it and excel at running bloodlines are a pretty good start but it really depends on the horse..I personally like reining and cutting bloodlines mixed with a barrel horse bloodline..
